The Teaching Power of Video: Global Health Media

The Teaching Power of Video

Global Health Media’s videos are watched and used in virtually every country in the world. They make a life-saving difference for mothers, children, and families. How? By helping the frontline health workers who care for them learn basic skills and information on newborn care, childbirth, and breastfeeding. And by giving these providers the tools they need to educate communities and caregivers.

Citizen scientists needed (Africa, Asia, Latin America

The GBIF network seeks to harness the enthusiasm and interest of individuals who participate in citizen science by working with data publishers to help them share data collected by project volunteers. The GBIF network is built on a member-state and organization model, which includes an endorsement process that help ensure that the quality, stability and relevance of the institutions who share their data.

Whether through smartphone-enabled field observations, online specimen transcriptions or other emerging innovations, citizen science is increasingly important to scientific research and policy. As evidence, look no further than the occurrence records provided through the GBIF network.

Accelerating poverty Reduction in Kenya

Kenya has been covered widely in economic news over the last decade, from the first large-scale application of mobile money to a vibrant technology hub in Africa. Indeed, Kenya experienced robust economic growth from 2005-06 to 2015-16, growing at an average annual rate of 5.3%, higher than the average in Sub-Saharan Africa. This growth translated into gains in the fight to reduce poverty, with about 4.5 million Kenyans escaping poverty.

It seems that in Kenya, cities—and especially the informal settlements within them—are not reaping the benefits of access to jobs and services. For example, a worker in Nairobi can only reach 25% of existing jobs within 60 minutes using the mini-bus system, while in Dakar, Senegal, they can reach 52% of existing jobs.

Global initiative: network tackling organized crime

What is the Global Initiative?
Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Geneva, The Global Initiative comprises a network of over 430 independent global and regional experts working on human rights, democracy, governance, and development issues where organized crime has become increasingly pertinent. The Global Initiative provides a platform to promote greater debate and innovative approaches as the building blocks to an inclusive global strategy against organized crime. It commissions and shares research globally; curates a robust resource library of 2,000 reports and tools specific to organized crime; and uses its tremendous convening power to unite both the private and public sectors against organized crime.Through a range of channels, the Global Initiative seeks to project the expertise of its Network members outwards and to make it available to a broader range of stakeholders, including through developing the evidence basis for policymaking; convening and facilitating multi-sectoral dialogue; and developing tools and programmes necessary to further the development of effective responses.

New York City fighting poverty by supporting mission Driven Startups

Are you building a mission-driven startup that could improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers? The Catalyst program at Blue Ridge Labs is designed to help founders turn a proven concept into a scalable technology platform.

Over the course of six months, as part of a small cohort of other founders, we’ll help you build version 2.0 of your product and get it into the hands of real people for feedback and validation. In parallel, we’ll work with you to identify the other resources you’ll need to be successful over the long-term – things like funding, team members, and partners – and we’ll help you put the systems in place to do this well.

The Blue Ridge Labs team specializes in creating and supporting early-stage social tech ventures (both for-profit and nonprofit). Alums of our Catalyst program have been named Echoing Green Fellows, participated in Y Combinator, raised rounds from prominent venture capitalists, received funding from major philanthropic institutions, been featured in NYTimes, Forbes, and more. Most importantly, the alumni of our programs help hundreds of thousands of people every day.

This year, we are collaborating with the National Domestic Workers Alliance Labs (NDWA Labs), one of the leading social movements in the country, to sponsor one team (out of four) that could improve job quality for housecleaners, nannies, and caregivers. The NDWA will engage directly with Catalyst teams throughout the program by helping them address specific challenges and opportunities related to NDWA’s areas of expertise through periodic working sessions.

Programme seeks Biodiversity Open Data

Programme seeks Biodiversity Open Data Ambassadors to expand best practices
Volunteer experts needed to advocate for access and use of free, FAIR and open data about life on Earth

The GBIF network has initiated a new programme aimed at supporting a corps of experts who promote free and open access to biodiversity data. During its initial quiet phase, the Biodiversity Open Data Ambassadors has already recruited 42 professionals from 19 countries representing each of GBIF’s six regions.

The programme aims to expand and reinforce the GBIF network, with a particular interest in building relationships in scientific research and policy communities where GBIF has been poorly represented. By leveraging their speaking opportunities at relevant conferences, workshops and other networking events, Ambassadors can share their experience and express their own commitment to free, FAIR and open data.

“We’re confident that the Biodiversity Open Data Ambassadors programme can further expand the domains and geographies represented in the GBIF network,” said Joe Miller, GBIF executive secretary. “Ambassadors can contribute to a wider understanding and appreciation of GBIF, both as a research data infrastructure and a global community of practice. We hope the programme can support our champions while at the same time encouraging our network’s shared vision of a more open, transparent, reproducible and interoperable scientific culture.”

The programme is intended to recognize and support the active role that ambassadors have alongside the network’s node managers and staff, formal delegates, committee members and Secretariat staff. While these groups work tirelessly to promote GBIF’s mission and transform data culture towards more FAIR and open practice, it remains a comparatively small group that cannot reach all the relevant communities themselves.

The primary requirement for ambassadors is their commitment to advocate for open biodiversity data in at least one event, publication or process each year. The term of appointment is unlimited, though individuals may be required to reapply after any two-year period of inactivity.

In addition to serving as advocates in their own professional communities, Ambassadors are encouraged to help GBIF identify events and audiences where engagement can have an impact. They also provide a pool of experts who the GBIF Secretariat and GBIF nodes can tap to represent the network and promote open biodiversity data at specific events.

The GBIF Secretariat is developing dedicated resources to help ambassadors’ efforts, including presentation slides, talking points, posters, and support materials in both digital and print formats.

– More functionality? Let us know what you mean or which app is a good example.
– different view to manage your project (s)? Give us a small example?
– more information regarding operations, marketing strategy, financial planning, of the company as a whole? Just be specific or the department and specific level of company, we aim to be 100% transparent, but need to build our membership to insure that there are enough people to give input in making sure we are on the right track.
